about
This was a rumination on digging back into the past: the things and people and instances that we don’t want to face, since it means we have to face our regrets, our fears, our insecurities, but it’s ultimately a song about how this is a process we can trust will benefit us in the end. There’s a strain in there, to be sure, but it’ mostly a reflection on what it means to dig up the bones of your past and that can be daunting, but ultimately good.
lyrics
I’m afraid of the water, I’m afraid of the deep
I’m afraid of the water, and the secrets it keeps
And what do you start with, after seventeen years
Were we ever finished, was it ever real
I have an idea, and it makes me feel new
I get rocks in my stomach, when I tell it to you
And maybe it’s pleasure, who stole my joy
And maybe it’s freedom, who took the boy
But it’s highly unlikely, they’re gone for good
The water is rushing, the water is good
I go down to the water, I go down to the deep,
I go down to the water, and the secrets it keeps
And do you feel settled, surrounded by books,
And the creative hustle, and maintaining your looks
And maybe it’s you, who opened so wide,
And maybe it’s me, who stepped aside
I go down to the water, I go down to the deep,
I go down to the water, and the secrets it keeps

On Katie Mullins’ third release, Three Songs, the magic of threes is in full effect: a brew of her signature haunting vocals taken to another level, with glowing overdubbed choruses that seem to weave witchery, and the charisma of unassuming candor.
Diane's music is like salve on my soul. Her performances lower my blood pressure and leave me feeling renewed. I am so grateful for her sounds. Katie Mullins
Sibylle Biaer's music combines the candle-lit winter gemutlichkeit (coziness) I knew from living in Berlin in the early 2000's, with a longing and wistfulness of some other world. Katie Mullins
Beautiful and mysterious folk-adjacent songs from this UK outfit that wreathe delicate acoustic guitar in mist-like synths. Bandcamp New & Notable Apr 10, 2021
